Doberman: you just got a Doberman puppy
In every puppy, the instincts of play, struggle, prey, and also the instinct of scent are born from birth. But these qualities require compulsory development. It is much easier to develop them in a puppy than in an adult dog.
To achieve success in the follow-up work, the puppy should begin to “put on the trail” from 3-4 months, using the instinct of scent, food and stalking. First, the track will consist of 15-25 steps, each of which contains a piece of your favorite treat. Your puppy will very soon like to find a gourmet with the help of a scent. He will learn to associate the smell of a person’s footprint with the smell of goodies. Gradually, introducing complications: increasing the length of the track, turns, endurance, you will teach a young dog to solve the most complex and intricate maze of the track. You will feel unprecedented joy when your dog unravels the most difficult track without losing, despite various hindrances, he discovers and proudly identifies the object he has found.
For spectacular obedience work, the development of the game instinct is important. With great pleasure, puppies “hunt”, grab, carry various objects in their mouths. A ball on a rope is a great toy. You need to play it daily, but not for long, without bothering the puppy. The game manifests such qualities as temperament, the desire for prey, trust in a person, the ability to concentrate on the subject for a long time. Gradually, the first obedience skills are formed in the game (movement “near”, shrinkage, laying, apportioning) and only later is coercion introduced with obligatory encouragement after a correctly executed command. Encouragement when training a Doberman should always prevail over coercion, it is necessary to constantly maintain the desire to work in the puppy. Praise the dog as often as possible, show her how happy you are when it works well.
During the game, the instincts of both prey and struggle develop, so necessary for good defense work. Watching a moving rag or roller, the puppy seeks to grab this object and take hold of the “prey”. Prey should always be caught, and in the process of struggle, the puppy must win. After all, defeating the “prey”, the puppy becomes more self-confident. In such games, he also gradually accumulates experience, improves movement, develops muscles, strengthens the jaw. Gradually, from a small careless sloppy puppy turns into a dexterous, fast, tireless hunter and fighter.
“Prey” increases in size, begins to resist more violently, and it becomes more difficult to catch it. And along with this, the desire to “grab”, “to mine” is growing, and the grip is improving. Crucial is the puppy’s sense of victory over the prey. This victory is the impetus for further progress. Classes are becoming more and more difficult: a threat is introduced by the stack, the roller is replaced by a soft sleeve, various people are working with the puppy. At all stages of training, the guide should cheer the puppy and young dog, help her win. If you patiently, step by step, go through all the stages of preparation, then you are guaranteed success.
In the education of the Doberman there is another very important point – socialization. A puppy should not be too distrustful of people. Aggressiveness in a puppy is a manifestation of self-doubt. And if you have not solved this problem since childhood, then you will grow a cowardly or overly aggressive dog. Such a dog is not able to perform in cynological sports disciplines, it is difficult to live with her in society. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate courage, self-confidence and goodwill in a puppy.
More often take him to visit you, to the city, on shopping trips, introduce new people, cars, objects. The more time and attention you devote to the puppy, the more likely it is that your puppy will turn into an intelligent, pleasant dog in communication.
Of course, most of our Dobermans will not serve in the police or army, will not take the course of search and rescue services, are not going to take part in international IPO competitions. These are mostly companion dogs, our friends. But if you master all the skills with your puppy, then every day will bring you great joy in communicating with your four-legged friend. And when he becomes a strong, confident Doberman, you will be proud of him, recognizing that it was you who helped him in this.
